Migrating from Vyatta to VyOS

If you have been following my articles about Vyatta, you are probably wondering what to do since Brocade has basically killed the community edition of Vyatta. The original vyatta.org website now is defunct, and unfortunately for the community, all the great knowledge that was stored in the vyatta forums has been lost. Never fear, the community that made Vyatta great has stepped up and continued the project, now known as VyOS. The VyOS project home is at , and migrating an existing Vyatta Core system to VyOS couldn’t be easier! Follow these easy steps and you will be running the latest stable VyOS release in a matter of minutes.

Step 1: Add the new VyOS maintainers GPG key…

cd /tmp
wget http://vyos.net/so3group_maintainers.key
sudo apt-key add so3group_maintainers.key

Step 2: Download the new VyOS image…

#if you need physical or virtual 64-bit release
wget http://mirror.vyos.net/iso/release/1.0.4/vyos-1.0.4-amd64.iso
#if you need physical 32-bit release
wget http://mirror.vyos.net/iso/release/1.0.4/vyos-1.0.4-i586.iso
#if you need virtual 32-bit release
wget http://mirror.vyos.net/iso/release/1.0.4/vyos-1.0.4-i586-virt.iso

Step 3: Add the new VyOS image…

#if you need physical or virtual 64-bit release
add system image vyos-1.0.4-amd64.iso
#if you need physical 32-bit release
add system image vyos-1.0.4-i586.iso
#if you need virtual 32-bit release
add system image vyos-1.0.4-i586-virt.iso

When adding the image, you will be asked a name for the new image, asked if you want to keep your config directory, and asked if you want to keep the SSH host keys. The default answers for all of these is probably what you want, so just press enter for them.

Now is the time to reboot. After about a minute or two, your router should be back and running VyOS 1.0.4 (hydrogen).

Step 4: Update the repositories…

configure
set system package repository community components main
set system package repository community distribution hydrogen
set system package repository community url http://packages.vyos.net/vyos
commit
save
exit
sudo apt-get update

That’s it! You are now running VyOS 1.0.4, and ready to continue moving forward, supporting the communities hard work!
