Updating HE TunnelBroker endpoint for dynamic address on Vyatta

In my earlier article, I explained how to setup a tunnel to Hurricane Electric, but at the time I hadn’t completely figured out how to make it automatically update the tunnel endpoint address if you have a dynamic address. Since then, I have figured it out and wanted to share how to make it work.

We can use the dyndns service to update tunnelbroker.net, but we have to set a custom server. Note that tunnelbroker.net updates can trigger a dynamic dns update if you have a free dynamic dns domain setup at dns.he.net. I make a subdomain called dyn.onebadpixel.com and delegated it to he.net nameservers, then create dynamic DNS hostnames like office.dyn.onebadpixel.com. In your tunnelbroker account on the advanced tab of your tunnel, you can tell it to update the dyn dns entry when the tunnel is updated.

Let’s configure it.

#note that you cant re-use the service, so if you are using dyndns already
#this wont work. You would need your ddns updates to a different service
#host-name is your tunnel name listed on the main page of your tunnelbroker.net account
#login is your tunnelbroker.net username
#password is the "update key" on the advanced tab when you click on your tunnel details
#server is the tunnelbroker update server for updating the IP

edit service dns dynamic interface eth0 service dyndns
set host-name onebadpixel-1.tunnel.tserv9.chi1.ipv6.he.net
set login onebadpixel
set password 3DJgPxxxxxxx16EEV
set server ipv4.tunnelbroker.net
top
commit
save

#see the results
show service dns dynamic interface eth0
 service dyndns {
     host-name onebadpixel-1.tunnel.tserv9.chi1.ipv6.he.net
     login onebadpixel
     password 3DJgPxxxxxxx16EEV
     server ipv4.tunnelbroker.net
 }

If we want to verify that the update worked, we can exit config mode and check the status.

#exit config mode and check the update
exit
show dns dynamic status
interface    : eth1
ip address   : 10.1.1.2
host-name    : onebadpixel-1.tunnel.tserv9.chi1.ipv6.he.net
last update  : Thu Jan  1 00:00:00 1970
update-status: good

Enjoy!
